January Brings Terrible News for ‘Prison Break’ Fans

It’s been a good year for Prison Break fans. Not only did the series celebrate its 20th anniversary, but we finally got the news that we’ve been waiting for — a follow-up is officially on the way. But all that good luck had to run out eventually. Those who have been taking their dear old time with a rewatch of the iconic Fox production will need to pick up the pace as, on January 30, the title will break out of Netflix. The good news is we’re blowing the horn and sounding the alarm about the platform’s decision to part ways with the Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller-led title of yesteryear with what feels like enough notice for fans to binge the series during their holiday festivities when family and friend visits get to be a bit too much.

An instant success, Prison Break first aired on Fox in 2005quickly pulling audiences in thanks to its take on the crime drama genre and the tight-knit bond between the two brothers at the center of the story. The plot follows Lincoln Burrows (Purcell), who has just been sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit. On the outside looking in and eager to get his sibling out of lockup is Michael Scofield (Miller), a dedicated younger brother who will do anything to ensure he and Lincoln are reunited. With a plan in mind, Michael gets working on an unbelievable scheme that is crazy enough that it just might help Lincoln break loose from his holdings and clear his name once and for all.

Created by Paul Scheuring (Den of Thieves, A Man Apart), the title saw plenty of supporting performances across its five seasons, with names like Amaury Nolasco (2 Fast 2 Furious), Robert Knepper (Breakout Kings), Robin Tunney (The Craft), Peter Stormare (Until Dawn), Marshall Allman (Blue Like Jazz), Wade Williams (The Bernie Mac Show) and more joining the cast.

The Future of ‘Prison Break’

For years, audiences have clamored in hopes that their prayers would be answered and a Prison Break reboot would go into production. Finally, in Octoberit was announced that Hulu had picked up the long-dreamed-of follow-up, with a slew of new faces joining the universe. While Miller and Purcell won’t be back in action as the two brothers who first captured the hearts of audiences around the globe, the brand-new ensemble is set to include Drake Rodger (The Winchesters), Emily Browning (Ghost Ship), Lukas Gage (Smile 2), Clayton Cardenas (Mayans M.C.), Georgie Flores (Dumplin'), Myles Bullock (Runaways) and JR Bourne (Teen Wolf). As of right now, the title hasn’t set a release date, but the gears are finally grinding for more Prison Break.
