The minor space era that Peter Parker has been enjoying in The Amazing Spider-Man is unprecedented in its amount of fun and nuance. Half a reprieve and half a character-building arc, Peter has been attempting to become stronger so that he can go toe-to-toe with Hellgate on Earth, but a space adventure with alien companions has drawn him into a wonderful side quest.
In this side quest, a group of prisoners Peter freed have joined him, including Raelith of Kailowho’s been something of a romantic or flirtatious interest. One companion, Symbie, hasn’t been given a lot of development or attention, yet they’ve made a fairly big impact and are reminiscent of cute Star Wars characters like Grogu.
Symbie is a Cute Surprise in Spider-Man’s Space Adventure
Symbie takes the cake as the cutest symbiote
Just like most of the alien creatures Peter freed from Dr. Xanto Starblood's LaboratorySymbie’s presence was alarming yet harmless. The aliens showed gratitude to Peter, with Rocket Raccoon, Raelith, Nial, and Symbie accompanying him thereafter. As its name suggests, Symbie is a symbiote, though it notably doesn’t seem to need a host.
It’s quite small and cherubic, too, behaving like a rambunctious, playful dog. This isn’t the symbiote’s first appearance; however, its previous appearances were rather niche. Symbie first appeared in Timeslide (2024) #1, as well as Marvel Mutts Infinity Comic (2023) #17 and #18, where the symbiote deliberately mimics the look and characteristics of Lucky to emulate a dog.
Plus, where Spider-Man’s black symbiote suit would have a big white spider on whose legs wrap around to another insignia on his back, Symbie’s insignia bears an ‘S.’ Symbie’s final form in Marvel Mutts was less distinctive, but still adorable, and that’s more or less the form Peter finds it in when it’s freed from Xanto’s at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man #11.
Symbie May Be a Flash-in-the-Pan Companion
Say goodbye to Symbie in The Amazing Spider-Man
Symbie has gone from the Collector’s zoo to the zoologist Xanto’s laboratoryand its time hanging around Spider-Man is probably coming to an end, along with all the companions Peter has amassed while in space. Indeed, with him returning to Earth in the next Peter-centric Amazing Spider-Man issue, #19, it won’t be long before the space era has concluded and his new friends depart on their own paths. As for Symbie, it’ll be exciting to see where or when the silly little symbiote might turn up in the future.
