Diogo Jota’s sons will accompany the match-day mascots when his former clubs Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers meet on Saturday.

Dinis and Duarte, two of the children of Jota and Rute Cardoso, will take the Anfield pitch in what is sure to be an emotional occasion.

The fixture is the first time Jota’s two Premier League clubs have met since the Portugal international died in a car crash in northwest Spain along with his brother, Andre Silva, in July, as he headed back to Liverpool to begin pre-season training.

The tragedy, which came only days after the 28-year-old Jota had married his long-term partner, resulted in an outpouring of affection from across the worldwide football community.

Liverpool took the decision to retire Jota’s No20 shirt, which he had made his own since moving to Merseyside from Molineux in September 2020, to ensure his legacy is for ever preserved at the club.

Jota’s sons were with their younger sister and parents on the Anfield pitch when Liverpool celebrated their 20th league title success after the game with Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

The family had previously attended Liverpool’s opening fixture of the season against Bournemouth, and Wolves’ first game of the campaign against Manchester City, at which supporters of the clubs showed the esteem in which the humble and popular striker was held.
