The New Orleans Saints have have won their last three games with rookie quarterback Tyler Shoughthe latest being a 29-6 win over the New York Jets.
Sunday’s Week 16 win over the Jets at the Caesars Superdome was the first time this season that the Saints (5-10) have won more than two games in a row. Four of the five Saints wins in 2025 have been with Shough starting at quarterback, who is now 4-3 as an NFL starter since taking over in Week 9.
Shough received praise from fans and media for his recent performance, and the compliments came pouring in after Sunday’s win over the Jets. Zack Brenner on X said, “why is no one talking about Tyler Shough as a rookie of the year candidate? Best QB in this class… and it’s not even close.”
Shough’s performance on Sunday saw him throw for a season-high 308 yards, completing 32 of 49 passes with one touchdown and no interceptions. The season-high passing volume resulted in Shough finishing with just 8 rushing yards on 2 carries.
Times-Picayune columnist Jeff Duncan said was somewhat critical of Saints coach Kellen Moore’s handling of Shough in the fourth quarter with the Saints leading. “Tyler Shough is taking a lot of big hits with the game pretty much over I think I’d start running the ball if I was Kellen Moore.”
Shough was able to find success moving the ball despite the Saints having several injured starters on offense. Jono Barnes on X said, “people will now say ‘its just the Jets. And that’s fair. But Tyler Shough is literally playing with the backups’ backups. What he is doing is not “easy.”
Saints No. 1 wide receiver Chris Olave was healthy and had his best game with Shough, catching 10 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns. His fist touchdown was a 23-yard pass from Shough, with his second score being a 38-yard strike from Taysom Hill.
The Shough-to-Olave connection was praised by Brentley Weissman on X. “Tyler Shough is legit. His chemistry with Chris Olave is special… this duo could be filthy next year.”
