Damaging winds bring down powerlines, trees early Wednesday, closing or delaying some Oregon schools

High winds blew through western Oregon early Wednesday bringing down power lines, limbs and trees across the region resulting in widespread power outages.

Many of the closed schools were along the Oregon coast and in the foothills of the Cascades. All Astoria and Seaside-area schools are closed Wednesday due to power outages. Pacific Power, which serves that northern part of the coast reported more than 23,000 customers out as of 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Columbia County has schools closed in Clatskanie and Rainier, and bus route changes in St. Helens.

Clark County closed schools in Battle Ground and will have late starts in Hockinson.

Schools in the Estacada district are two hours late due to power outages.

Portland-area residents have reported various outages to PGE, but currently no schools are closed in the metro area. A few schools in Tigard-Tualatin and Lake Oswego are on delay
