The 49ers made a pair of expected roster moves before their pivotal prime-time matchup against the Carolina Panthers on “Monday Night Football.”

First, San Francisco officially elevated kicker Matt Gay from the practice squad. The team signed Gay to its practice squad last week to temporarily replace Eddy Pineirowho sustained a Grade 1 hamstring injury in the 49ers’ 41-22 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11.

Piñeiro is considered week to week, so Gay likely will stick around until Piñeiro is given the green light to return to the field.

Gay was kicking 68.4 percent on field goals (13-for-19) during the 2025 NFL season with the Washington Commanders before he was released last week. But in seven seasons with multiple teams, Gay has an 84 percent field-goal percentage.

San Francisco also elevated linebacker Jalen Graham from the practice squad to be available against Carolina.

Linebacker Tatum Bethune suffered an ankle injury against the Cardinals and will be sidelined for multiple weeks. Coach Kyle Shanahan shared that veteran linebacker Curtis Robinson would replace Bethune at the starting MIKE linebacker spot.

Bethune was filling in for team captain Fred Warnerwho suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the team’s Week 6 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It has been the theme all season for San Francisco: next man up.

And now, under the bright lights of “Monday Night Football” playing in front of their home Levi’s Stadium crowd, the 49ers will seek back-to-back wins for the first time since Week 3 this season.
