But a storm is ready to blow in and Valley Water says rain and wind will make it a wet Christmas in Santa Clara County.
“Our teams are making sure that the creeks are flowing, that our flashing areas are in good shape, but mostly we’re just looking at minor risk going through this holiday season,” VW Public Relations Representative Paola Reyes said. “But we always encourage people to stay alert to be safe, especially registering for emergency alerts with Alert SCC.”
The impact in the South Bay will be less than our counterparts in the East and North Bay, but you can always be prepared.
In addition to weather and emergency alerts, our ABC7 meteorologists suggest keeping storm drains clear from debris and tying down or removing holiday decorations will help combat the incoming rain and wind.
It’s easy work overall, but preparations for the unhoused are much more serious -even life or death.
“We’re going to fill up the U-haul with all the warm stuff that we have and take it out there to make sure that people are as warm and dry as possible to prevent death,” Unhoused Response Group Advocate Shaunn Cartwright said.
More than 150 unhoused residents died in Santa Clara County in 2025; they were remembered with an annual service on Monday morning.
“The majority of the people who died are never going to get a tombstone, this is the only tombstone that they’re going to get and it’s important to recognize them,” Cartwright said.
“Lives matter, they matter and this is our way of showing that,” Garth Pickett with the Silicon Valley Interreligious Council said.
It’s fewer deaths than last year, but advocates say this is nothing to celebrate.
Cartwright highlights that we’ve seen a much milder year of weather compared to 2024.
With serious cold and wet weather approaching, remembering that one life lost is too many is of utmost importance.
“It’s important to know how many people are dying on the streets. It’s important to know that people are freezing to death on the streets,” Cartwright said. “If you look at the coroner’s dashboard, the numbers are going up and up almost every day. And that’s a sign that people exposed to weather are dying.”
If the weather meets a certain criterion, inclement weather will be declared.
This will allow the county to open warming centers and provide additional support to help prevent deaths as best as possible.
