*This is a prediction*
As the St. Louis Cardinals continue to navigate through the 2026 MLB offseason, one of the top players they can look to trade is Willson Contreras. With Contreras only having two years left of team control, and the Cardinals looking to revamp, now would be the best time to trade him while his value is at a high.
With Willson Contreras, he will want to be traded to a contender, and a contending team that makes sense to trade for him this offseason is the New York Yankees.

St. Louis Cardinals Trade Willson Contreras to the New York Yankees
The New York Yankees have had an extremely quiet offseason so far, and that is something that should be alarming for them as they have seen the rest of the American League East Division improve throughout the offseason so far, while they instead have stood pat and not made any major moves to advance the team. While they still have Aaron Judge playing in the prime of his career, they need to do a better job of setting the team up for success.
The Yankees turned to Ben Rice at first base as the 2025 season went on, which led to them letting Paul Goldschmidt walk in free agency. Yet, Rice is still young, and with the Yankees in a contending spot right now, they need to have a more veteran presence at first base that can help make an impact, and they can trade for Willson Contreras to accomplish this.
Willson Contreras is 33 years old, so he isn’t necessarily in the prime of his career anymore, but he still finished last season with a .257/.344/.447 slash line while adding on 20 home runs and a career-high 80 RBIs. With Contreras, he also graded out as the third-best first baseman from a defensive standpoint last season, showing he can provide an impact on both offense and defense. That is something the Yankees will covet, and lead to him being a prime trade target for them this offseason.
