Kentucky mourns the loss of former Gov. Martha Layne Collins, the state’s first and only female Governor. She was 88 years old. Gov. Andy Beshear made the announcement Saturday morning on social media. He called Collins a “powerhouse” and noted her accomplishments during her time as governor, including bringing Toyota to the United States for the first time. Collins served as the 56th governor of Kentucky from 1983 to 1987, and as the 48th lieutenant governor of Kentucky from 1979 to 1983. Attorney General Russell Coleman posted on social media offering condolences to Collins’ family and noting Collins’ accomplishments and leadership for women in Kentucky. Arrangements for Collins have not been released at this time.
